Botanical Name: Protea cynaroides

Common Name: King Protea, Giant Protea

Plant Family: Proteaceae

Bring the majestic beauty of South Africa’s national flower into your home or conservatory with our King Protea.

Famous for producing the largest flower heads in the Protea genus, the King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is a true architectural masterpiece. Featuring dramatic, crown-like pink bracts surrounding a soft central bowl, this iconic bloom is a celebrated favourite among plant collectors, floral designers, and exotic garden enthusiasts across the UK.

Whether you are looking for a unique botanical gift for a plant lover, sending a meaningful piece of home to a South African expat, or embarking on a rewarding growing project, The Seed Story provides everything you need to succeed.

Why our kit gets results:

In their native Cape Fynbos habitat, Protea seeds rely on naturally occurring bushfire smoke to trigger germination. Every kit includes an authentic smoke germinating disc—the crucial element that breaks seed dormancy and dramatically improves your germination success rate at home.

  • Exotic Gifting: Beautifully wrapped and ready to give as a unique eco-friendly gift.

  • UK-Friendly Growing: Ideal for sunny patios in summer and light conservatories or greenhouses during winter.

  • Fully Certified: Legally imported with full DEFRA plant health certification.

Growing Instructions

Top Tip for UK Growers: Proteas prefer acidic, nutrient-poor, sandy soil and plenty of air circulation. Never use rich garden compost or fertilizers containing phosphorus, as this will harm the plant.
  1. Smoke Priming (Essential Step): Dissolve 1/4 of the smoke germinating disc in 100ml of warm water. Soak your King Protea seeds in this smoke solution for 24 hours before planting to break seed dormancy.

  2. Soil Preparation: Expand your soil pellet (or use a mix of 50% coarse horticultural sand/perlite and 50% ericaceous compost). Ensure your pot has excellent drainage holes.

  3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1cm deep into the moist soil mix. Press lightly and water gently.

  4. Germination: Place pots in a bright, warm spot with good airflow (ideal temperatures: 15°C–22°C with cooler nights). Keep soil lightly moist, never waterlogged. Germination typically takes 4 to 8 weeks.

  5. UK Winter Care: Protect young plants from frost. Move potted Proteas outdoors into full sun during summer, and bring them into a bright conservatory, greenhouse, or sunroom before the first winter freeze.
