There is no need to leave your seeds sitting in their packet until spring.
Growing something unusual from seed is wonderfully rewarding, but it can require a little patience.

 

The good news is that you do not necessarily need to wait until spring. Many of our seeds can be started indoors or under cover during autumn and winter. The right growing conditions are more important than the month on the calendar.

Every packet includes instructions for that particular variety. Use those as your main guide, with this page providing a little extra help along the way.

 

Common Growing Problems

Nothing Has Germinated

Check the temperature, moisture and sowing date. Protea-family seeds may need cooler nights, while Bird of Paradise may need more consistent warmth. Both may simply need more time.

 

Mould Is Appearing

The growing medium may be too wet or there may not be enough airflow. Improve ventilation, remove badly affected material and allow the surface to dry slightly before watering again.

 

The Seedling Is Tall and Pale

It is probably not receiving enough light. Move it gradually into a brighter position and rotate the pot regularly.

 

A Seedling Has Collapsed

This may be damping-off, a fungal problem encouraged by wet and stagnant conditions. Remove the affected seedling, reduce excess moisture and improve airflow.

A Protea Seedling Is Yellowing

Check for overwatering, poor drainage or unsuitable fertiliser. Stop feeding, make sure the drainage holes are clear and allow the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings.

Five Simple Growing Rules

Follow the instructions for your variety. Proteas and Bird of Paradise need different treatment.

Think conditions, not calendar.
Many seeds can be started indoors during winter. Keep the growing medium moist, not soaked.
Overwatering causes more problems than underwatering.

Give them light and fresh air.
Warm, dark and humid conditions can encourage weak growth and mould.

 

Be patient.

 

Unusual seeds may take their time, but the first little green shoot is worth the wait.

Growing from seed is about enjoying the beginning, not rushing to the finish.
