Add a vibrant burst of golden sunshine to your home or conservatory with our Sunshine Conebush Seed Kit.
A proud member of the South African Protea family, the Sunshine Conebush (Leucadendron) is renowned for its striking, radiant yellow leaves (bracts) that surround the central flower head. Glowing like golden rays during bloom, this evergreen shrub offers brilliant year-round colour, dramatic architectural structure, and stems that are prized worldwide by luxury florists for their exceptional vase life.
Whether you are surprising a fellow plant enthusiast with a unique botanical gift, recreating a slice of Cape Fynbos in your conservatory, or trying your hand at growing exotic evergreens from seed, The Seed Story gives you everything needed for a successful growing experience.
Why our kit gets results:
In the wild Cape Fynbos, Leucadendron seeds rely on seasonal fires and smoke chemistry to signal that it is safe to sprout. Each of our kits includes an authentic smoke germinating disc to break seed dormancy and significantly boost your germination rates at home.
Radiant Gifting: Elegantly packaged in a gift-ready box for birthdays, celebrations, or eco-conscious plant lovers.
UK-Friendly Growing: Thrives in sunny pots on patio decking during warm summer months, and moves easily into bright conservatories or sunrooms over winter.
Fully Compliant: Legally imported with complete DEFRA plant health passports.
Growing Instructions
Top Tip for UK Growers: Like all members of the Protea family, Sunshine Conebush demands acidic, well-draining soil and plentiful air movement. Never use standard garden compost or fertilisers containing phosphorus.
Smoke Priming (Essential Step): Dissolve 1/4 of the smoke germinating disc in 100ml of warm water. Soak your Sunshine Conebush seeds in the smoke solution for 24 hours prior to sowing to awaken the dormant seed embryo.
Soil Preparation: Prepare a lightweight, acidic potting mix (50% ericaceous compost and 50% coarse horticultural sand or perlite). Ensure your container has ample drainage holes.
Sowing: Sow the soaked seeds gently into the surface of the soil, covering them lightly with a thin 5mm layer of coarse sand or grit.
Germination: Place pots in a well-lit, ventilated area with alternating temperatures (warm daytimes around 18°C–22°C and cooler night times). Keep the growing medium slightly moist, never soggy. Sprouting usually occurs within 3 to 7 weeks.
UK Winter Care: Protect young foliage from frosts. Keep your pot outdoors in full sun throughout spring and summer, then move indoors to a bright greenhouse or conservatory before the cold winter weather arrives.
